PROS / A feature-rich application, Diskeeper has some amazing features and sports an excellent defragmentation engine.

CONS / Novice users may find Diskeeper a bit too complex to use.

VERDICT / Diskeeper sports the best overall features and performance among the programs we reviewed.

Diskeeper provides a variety of features that are powerful and easy enough that the general computer user will feel right at home. Diskeeper is not only a top performer in the area of disk defragmenter software but also surpasses the competition in performance speed and vast feature set; as a result this powerful software has earned our Top Ten Reviews Gold Award. Unlike many other disk defragmenter applications on the market Diskeeper supports multiple types of defragmentation methods and configuration options. One of the biggest features would have to be the software’s InvisiTasking technology which gives you the freedom of working while defragmentation occurs in the background. We noticed almost no performance drop while using the background defragmentation and were pleased to see that working didn’t slow the process down. As disk defragmenter software changes it is becoming more common to prevent defragmentation before it occurs. Diskeeper utilizes a new engine known as “just in time” to help prevent fragmentation before it even begins.

At first glance, Diskeeper appears to be quite a bit more complicated than many of the other disk defragmenter software applications we reviewed. This is due to the fact that the software is set up to not only be a onetime solution but a long term solution to defragmentation problems. The idea of having the application continually running in the background can be unsettling, but we found that the companies claim to zero overhead (zero resources hits) held true. The disk defragmenter software was very responsive and left a very small footprint on our systems resources.

Diskeeper has a large list of features that will appeal to every type of computer user. Some of the more heavily touched features include its IntelliWrite defragmentation routines that offer the capability to consistently keep files from becoming defragmented on a drive. Another feature is the boot time defragmentation option which requires it to run outside of Windows. This feature can help defragment boot files that are normally protected by Windows but can become fragmented, potentially causing slow down problems when booting a PC.

One surprising feature was the fact Diskeeper can prevent file fragmentation before it happens. They use IntelliWrite technology to intelligently write files to the disk to prevent up to 85 percent of fragmentation from occurring. This feature combines with all the others in Diskeeper to deliver a solution that's more effective than simply defragmenting your hard drive. Diskeeper turns your computer into a highly efficient machine, which reduces cooling and energy consumption. The most powerful defragmentation engines seek out and eliminates any file fragmentation before it causes serious damage to your machine. I-FAAST technology optimizes file placement for fast access.

For novice users there is a usable feature in the form of a guided feature menu. Diskeeper has a quick launch menu which opens on the left side. The quick launch menu shows all the options available in a fairly easy to read format with guided instructions for utilizing each feature. The main windows show each drive found on the computer, a user can generally right click on each drive to use different actions, such as IntelliWrite, automatic defragmentation, and even SSD options.

Automatic defragmentation can be setup and run almost without intervention from the user. The feature allows Diskeeper to run in the background and to defragment a hard drive on a regular basis. It is basically a set it and forget it option that can work in the background while a user conducts other tasks.

A further impressive feature found in Diskeeper is the application’s reporting and logging ability for each defragmentation session. Other disk defragmenter software did not have such comprehensive reporting tools. A user can create individual reports for each session and then archive them for later comparison. The log files are also comprehensive enough for even the most advanced system administrators to use. Both the reporting and logging features were detailed and comprehensive in the information about the drive defragmented and the drive’s file structure.

While beginner or casual users can use Diskeeper, more advanced users will find the most value in its rich feature set. Diskeeper is designed ideally for those that have intricate network setups with a large number of computers or hard drive servers. While other defragmentation applications simply defragment a drive, Diskeeper goes the extra mile with its robust, defragmentation features. Diskeeper is built to increase performance of any drive, regardless of its file system or drive type.

Several features that could have used some improvement include the support webpage which held only a FAQs section for common problems. Some vendors offer message boards or forums where users can post problems for others to see.

This software does a great job of running alongside other applications, enabling true multitasking support even during a manual defragmentation session. Running either in an open window or minimized in automatic mode, the defragmentation software was able to perform quickly without affecting the performance of other programs. The developers did a great job of implementing routines that would enable this software to utilize spare CPU resource when other applications were not active. The software was able to easily switch between active and dormant modes when necessarily. This a key area in which this software performed better than others we reviewed.

To help gauge its active defragmentation performance, a manual session was setup and run. During the session the software defragged a 500GB hard drive and optimized its file structure even with other applications open. The drive analysis routine also ran very quick, producing results in seconds unlike other applications that took minutes to perform the same task. In a second test run, a manual defragmentation session was run on an external 100GB hard drive attached with a USB 2.0 connection. Surprisingly Diskeeper was just as fast at defragmenting a heavily fragmented drive.

Disk Optimization

IntelliWrite enables the software to not only defrag most drives but to also ensure that they remain in a relatively free state. While the manual defragmentation option can be run at will, the automatic defragmentation mode is the most recommended setting by the Diskeeper Corporation. This allows the software to both prevent further fragmentation of drive files while automatically defragmenting files during normal computer usage. This software defragments file folders, boot sector files and even system files that are locked. Boot sector files require that the application be run outside of a normal Windows session. This is often the case with most defragmentation applications.

There are multiple forms of support offered by the disk defragmenter software. Included with the software is an embedded help section that crosslinks to the Diskeeper website for further help. The help system offers a nice introduction and guide to the many features of the software while also offering further help with web resources. Since the help system is linked into the Diskeeper website, it requires an Internet connection during use. Online you will find additional support features including a FAQs page, customer contact section, guides and software updates. An online manual is also available for download. For extra support, users can also send email questions to technical support.

This software is a top notch performer. Its different strengths include a variety of defragmentation features, ability to run in the background without lowering a system’s performance and the ability to support a wide variety of driver configurations. Running the software with other heavy applications such as Adobe Dreamweaver, Microsoft Word and Firefox presented no real challenge to the application’s ability to manage a small system footprint and remain unobtrusive.

Overall Diskeeper holds a tremendous amount of power not typically found in all-in-one utility programs. It truly offers a more powerful solution for disk defragmentation needs that are often not even found in other stand-alone disk defragmenter software. This is one reason the Diskeeper Corporation has been a leader among this type of software. For those that want the best performing and most capable defragmentation application, the software should top the list of any power user’s defragmentation needs.
